After the marathon I felt horrible for not being able to meet up with a friend who had come all the way from Regensburg to Munich to cheer for me. But it was simply too cold and I needed to get under the hot shower after the run. So I decided it was time for a trip to Regensburg and even better- three other friends decided to join.

After annoying the hell out of the poor lady who was sitting in our compartment (four girls sharing the latest gossip- might not be exactly what you want to hear first thing in the morning) we got off in Regensburg - the most amazing, sunny day and our pick-up service was already waiting for us in front of the station.

Beautiful Regensburg is really worth a trip and even better if you do not have to rely on a tourist guide but have your local guide ;-)

After a delicious brunch- only the fish seemed to be a bit awkward - lucky Akhil who didn't have any...
We decided to drive over to Weltenburg's brewery in the famous Altmühltal. I had heard about this area before and passed it on the highway a million times but this was the first time I saw it.

Parking the car on the wrong side of the river we took a boat to cross the danube- quite an experience actually...

Accompanied by a motor bike gang the four girls and Akhil ventured out to get to know the "beer saint" and Linda could not wait to see a real monk. However, when we saw a guy in a robe she decided he wasn't really a monk, because they wear brown and not black! No, we don't have to understand this logic.

Christine was glad to get off the boat again - after we had briefly considered changing careers and getting our own ferry as well.

In order to earn our beers we then started climbing the hill behind the monastery but since there were still too many trees and not quite the view we expected we decided to head back to down to the beergarden. Bavarian expert Christine finally shed light on the way beer gardens came about: in the old days the servants needed to store everything in the cellars and after having done their work they were resting on benches in the middle of the backyards and soon others joined them- enjoying the coolness under the trees in the yard...
Cheers to the beer garden culture and weltenburger beer (which apparently was not that special, but the glasses looked nice anyway)...

After our well-deserved break we needed to head back to the ferry in order to make the last one at 5 pm. We didn't wanna end up like those poor American soldiers who seemed to have missed the last boat in the 1970s...

And we made it too

Unfortunately the lady on the boat had never taken a picture with a phone before- but well done anyway :-)

Also, I would need to add the picture that Nicole has taken of the person taking the ferry after us- a very lovely lady in purple who had a voice and walked like a bodybuilder - not a very common sight in conservative Bavaria it's gotta be said...

Anyway, thanks girls (and Akhil of course) for a really nice Sunday outing- let's do this soon again.
