After 2011 didn't prove highly successful in terms of traveling (at least after beautiful Kazakhstan in July) 2012 just has to get better. However, my first impression is that this year may not become the biggest year in terms of travel either as there are too many weddings taking place (I guess it's age kicking in).
But I'll try to schedule trips in between the wedding weekends and who knows some weddings in exotic places may pop up all of a sudden... My first trip will take me to (hopefully) see the northern lights in Tromso (sorry, can't find the Norwegian o here- it's just ö in Germany). And I cannot wait!!! Even though I've heard about freezing temperatures, maybe because it has been incredibly mild here in Munich this winter, I am ready for the cold. And who knows if I start appreciating the cold I might still take my friend up on this language trip to St Petersburg in Winter. But wait a minute, with Florida and the Bahamas planned for March and the family cruise in the Black Sea in June my boss may have a slight problem with taking off again for a language trip. So might need to postpone that to the second half of the year...
As you can tell this time of the year you can hardly wait to get away - I sometimes ask myself where the line is between enjoying your travels and escaping your reality/every day life though. I guess everyone needs to find their healthy balance and sometimes it's easy since money and work are the limiting factors.
My only new year's resolution thus remains - enjoying my time and not taking things for granted whether at home or traveling- just hope I will be allowed to fly soon again... ;-)

I have been debating the same: is traveling a way of escaping reality? And when I moved to Tromsø, I thought given its location - I might not be able to travel that much. But then I find myself wanting to explore Northern Norway, Finland and Sweden. I admire those who can find happiness by staying in one place all their lives, but I need the inspiration I get by traveling to new places and meeting people. As for balance - well, I guess you could travel for years, months, weeks or days and the balance could still be right. Someone mentioned that we travel with our minds - so then the balance become rather :I'm not very much at home..
ReplyDeleteAs for Tromsø: I am looking forward to seeing you here! It doesn't actually get colder than -18 or so (the cold record here is -20C) - and it really hasn't been colder than -11 since I got here, so don't worry about that. Today it is +4C.
I saw the Northern lights 2-3 times last week, so cross your toes for good conditions and a clear sky! At least we're learning how the forecast works (sort of) and where and when to go to the coast (away from the lights in the city).
