So my first viewing was not very successful - just when I got out of the subway I got an email saying that she (she was a girl- weirdly I assumed Brett would be a guys name) gave the apartment to someone else.
I still went to see it and it would have been nice but actually, it was too far off in the middle of Brooklyn.
If I go for Brooklyn I should probably look at the areas closer to Manhattan to keep the commute down -  I learned Dumbo or Brooklyn Heights might qualify. But after getting some advice from New Yorkers I'm thinking I might focus a bit more on East Village or Lower Eastside or else - even though it was not very popular with the crowd from Tribeca- upper East or Westside. God knows- I might end up in Staten Island like Lilly & Marshall in How I Met Your Mother and no one will ever come see me... :(

In any case- after the viewing I decided to walk down from 1st Avenue as I think walking the boroughs will be the best way of getting to know the city and reaching a decision on where I wanna stay. And I have to say, I love New York already- there is so much to see and explore. It's simply amazing- a bit overwhelming at times, but in a good way. After passing some really nice bars and restaurants, cafes, galleries and even entering a church where they are staging a musical called silence in the East Village, I reached the Lower Eastside, an area I don't think I've been to before. But I have to say it struck a tune with me - it seems to have a particular charm of its own. Walked past the tenement museum (virtual tour) and saw that this area was actually first inhabited by se Germans- who else? And at one point in time it was even the most densely populated area worldwide. I saw a lot of the typical new york style fire escape stairs and nice houses in general - some grungy looking bars and cafes that seemed to be calling my name - to make it short - can only recommend this area for a walk. Definitely want to go back there some time and learn more about the history too.

I then crossed the border into Chinatown and think I spent a lot more time there than originally intended because I got a bit lost around Canal Street- seemed to be walking in circles. But it was worth it too - Chinatown was full of life, really buzzing - imagine this in the city center in Munich on a Sunday... There were quite a few Chinese playing football on a sports field, practising traditional dances or simply watching the scene. All shops were open with a weird smell coming out of some of them - I decided to buy some delicious instant noodles which I shall be preparing in a minute- the plan is to stay up for Mad Men this evening, quite a challenge since it's on at 9 only... Feeling a bit like a grandma- having canceled the party last night as I had to go to bed at 8.30... But hope to get over this soon enough - but I think being a morning person in general doesn't help the adaptation process. Anyway, have been rambling enough- off to do some sophisticated cooking now. Tomorrow will be the first day at work- so really curious to see my office and learn about my new job... Shall keep you posted.

Pictures from my walk today to follow...
