from Munich in many ways. One is that bikers are still considered a bit exotic here so that can be good and bad. The downside is that some of the drivers do not even recognize a bike lane as such a thing but just think somebody painted something weird on the street. Also, they get very mad if you are cycling in the bus lane and bitch at you. On the bright side - random people stop you to tell you how much they admire your bike and congratulate you on taking the bike. But having said that, by the Hudson River on the western shore of Manhattan they have built a terrific bike path that can take you up to as high as the Bronx. I actually want to get my inline skates over here as this would be the perfect place for skating as well.
Come to think of it the most basic things become cool in New York - tell someone with a Schrebergarten in Germany how much New Yorkers are paying for 2x2 meters of gardening space or try selling the most crappy bikes for a couple of hundred Dollars.... Actually, I did some research on the bike shop where I got mine and it's pretty shady. Apparently the owner even got arrested for taking stolen bikes and selling them for a lot of money a few years ago... Well done for picking the right spot there.
Jogging is also one of these things that seem quite hip here whereas it would be the most boring thing in other part of the globe.
Tomorrow I'll be participating in the Wall Street run - together with a couple of thousand other people who exchanged their suits for running pants, sweating in this incredible humidity (must have been about 100% humidity yesterday - thankfully slightly better today)... I will make sure to blog you about my experience :-)
