Wanted to write about two pretty 'New York' things today - just came from a clothes swap, a friend invited me to go to one of her friend's places in the upper West Side and bring some of the old clothes I don't wear anymore. Apparently whatever is left gets donated to housing works so I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to clean out my closet. Although I didn't take many of the clothes that I wasn't wearing anymore when I moved you still always have stuff hanging in your closet that you think you still like but you actually never put it on. So I grabbed a couple of these things and headed uptown, not entirely sure what I had gotten myself into... It turned out to be a really fun afternoon. We ended up snacking on popcorn, hummus and crackers and sipping wine, seltzer and tea and each of us (six girls - no surprise there weren't too many guys) started showing off the clothes we brought. If you like something you simply need to shout fastest and try it on - and if it fits, like really nice work pants from Banana Republic which were too long for the girl who owned them, a jacket and some fairly decent shirts, you just take them. So in the end you may have emptied out your closet but then again you're filling it up with new crap. On the bright side, theses clothes swaps seem to be a regular event so if you don't end up wearing something you might as well take it to the next round... In any case it was a fun experience.
Another interesting topic I have been thinking about today is - doing a cleanse. Apparently that is something of a hobby for well-off New Yorkers who seem to have it all. During my yoga class this morning, the instructor (who must be making shit loads of money with all these things) was telling us that he was on a juice cleanse and does one every season. Now his new idea was to do a 'tele cleanse' where he would give participants advice, support them and probably charge them a hefty fee. Now, what really happens during a cleanse I wonder? I was naively thinking that you would simply not eat but have juice and other liquids, maybe some soup or vegetables once in a while but today I learned that cleanses are a real business and people order all their liquids from a specific provider who makes sure all the nutrients are included in the juice or whatever you end up drinking and you are supposed to get rid of all the nasty stuff in your body. However, the week after your cleanse I am sure you start putting it all back into your body and continue just the same - so not sure how much sense the whole exercise really makes. I would just be grumpy and would certainly not enjoy being healthy if I wasn't allowed to eat... Oh well, who knows, maybe I just haven't been in NY long enough in order to appreciate things like 'cleanses' ;-)
Anyway, off to watch a movie now - was already getting all excited about finally being able to follow the Oscars without having to stay up till 3 am since I am in a better time zone now, but then realized that we'll actually be embarking on our vacation in the Carribean on Oscar night this year. Oh well, better to experience things than watch something on TV, right? Will go to an Oscar's party next year then. Hoepfully I'll make it to a superbowl party before that :-) Right now everyone in the office is all about football. I still don't understand the game but I definitely want to watch the Superbowl and experience a proper American Superbowl party. The playoffs are on right now and I learned that NY didn't make it this year so it won't be as crazy as last year, but it'll still be a fun experience. So stay tuned - really haven't gotten that far learning about American sports - other than Basketball I really don't know the rules. Need to brush up on that. Maybe this year is a good opportunity as there are no other big sports events like soccer world cup or Olympic Games coming up.
