In my next life I am going to become a customer service agent - I just found out that you really have to know nothing for that job. After months in this country my bank finally gave me the go-ahead for a credit card. And the more I think about it, the more reluctant I get to actually use it. However, as I have learned over the previous months here, everything is build on credit here so you feel really left out not owning a credit card. And in order to improve your credit you need to use your credit card - so it's like a vicious circle that I seem to have broken now, God knows how... So what I actually wanted to know from the customer service agent is whether I can simply set up my credit card so it functions just like a debit card and everything I pay gets deducted automatically from my account. But that seemed to be a very difficult and unusual request as the poor lady on the phone kept apologizing but getting nowhere. In between a thousand 'I am happy to offer you 1% cash back on this' and 'We are pleased to offer you 3% bonus points on that', I managed to ask several times, rephrasing but to no avail. I have to say I'm pretty discouraged by American banks - when I first opened my account at Chase, a few days after their 5 billion loss had been published, I told the advisor that I was not sure I should trust them with my money and he had the guts to say: 'but that was not customer money...' And whenever I have tried to get a personal consultation they have been pretty useless. Just like the poor customer service agent on the phone today. What use is it that they have them working 24/7 if they are not able to assist anyway?
Oh well, I better get to reading the fine print - I'm sure if you really try there is a way of finding out how to set up your credit card just like a debit card... It's just weird how things seem so easy but actually are very complicated - same with the health care system and taxes here. Two things I have not really mastered yet. It's all part of my learning curve I suppose...
