Not sure whether it's just me but what's with all the 'banksy craze' in the city lately?

I have to admit I like the deal about selling some high priced art works by central park as cheap fakes and making fun of those very art buyers who make him rich. Still, just like anything in this city- enough with the hype. I saw an interview with the gothamist editor yesterday and I'm sure these guys would love to have banksy here every month of the year. Seriously, in some ways he really is brilliant - in spite of all the hype around him apparently noone really knows who he is and he manages to surprise people every day.

However, I also understand those that say- enough with all the banksy stuff- what about other artists in this city? It's not like the scene has been dormant and just waiting for this brit to come in and ridicule everyone...
Maybe the fact that he's becoming so mainstream will ultimately contribute to his demise...

In any case, although I have heard of the craze (difficult to escape these days), I still have not seen any of his 'pieces of art' but that's ok before I do, I want to see Five points, the grafitti center that is due to close soon...
