Gorgeous leaves colored in all shades of yellow, orange and red mixed with some left over green- we really enjoyed the great views and the scenic drive.
Meant to go to bear mountain first but it seemed very crowded with a big traffic jam leading into the area, probably because it is one of the first nice areas for New Yorkers to go hiking. So we decided to drive a little further to new paltz. New paltz is a very cute little hippie town that is surrounded by beautiful landscape, getting a lot more hilly, believe the Catskills weren't too far. The mohake mountains is where a lot of climbers go- so there was some serious climbing to be done. For 12 USD a day or 55 USD annual membership you get to hike on nicely marked and well maintained paths.
As the guide told us the one we picked offered 'instant gratification', meaning we didn't have to walk too far before we actually got to see some of the nice scenic views. I guess we are lucky the shutdown ended, don't know if they would have let us in a few weeks ago.
After our short hike, we ended up getting a bite to eat in the German 'brauhaus' close to the mountain. While they had real German beer, they certainly didn't know what a proper pretzel looks or tastes like... They did have a funny set of merchandizing, saying things like 'I'm spaetzle' or 'schnitz/pretz -el'. Weird American taste I guess...
