Over the past few days I've been experiencing the best and the worst of the States. With companies having limited vacation days, getting sick really is no fun here (not that it ever is). You need to think about sacrifising a vacation day or dragging yourself to the office and in the worst case, getting others sick as well. Really doesn't make sense to me... At least there is more flexibility, being able to work from home if you don't have meetings to attend. So I'm not complaining - ok, just a little...
So, it seems like the Superbowl has been creeping up and I still haven't acted on my resolution to learn more about American Football - oh well, I guess I'll focus on the commercials and their entertainment program - apparently my neighbor Beyonce (supposedly she has an apartment in TriBeCa) will be the halftime singer. There was quite a buzz after she was caught singing playback at the President's inauguration just a few weeks ago - but I'm pretty sure it's got to be live at the Superbowl?!
I don't even know who to root for yet - I remember I owned a San Francisco 49ers rain jacket years ago - so maybe that's a reason? I don't particularly like what I have heard about Baltimore but after loving the movie Silver Lining's playbook I might have to go with the ravens. From what I hear most people in NY who watch it are just after a good game anyway and have no real preference one way or the other.
Of course it would have been a little more exciting in the city last year, when the New York Giants actually played and won! Oh well, NY can't win every year I guess.
Most interesting are the Superbowl commercials - I just read that companies are paying about 4 million USD for a 30 second commercial - that is insane! But probably worth it, if you see the massive audience you are getting. Just checking out some of them online and interestingly enough German car manufacturers seem to be able to afford a pretty luxurious ad budget ;-) I liked the Audi one and the VW one by the way - see article
BTW my co-worker's husband actually directed the 'mean joe green' commercial which gets ranked as one of the best Superbowl commercials ever year after year. Pretty amazing, especially if you hear the stories behind these spots. You might think it's only 30 seconds but the amount of work and effort that goes into this. Apparently with this one, there was a whole debate about whether to have black athlete in it - interestingly enough VW is just getting into a debate about racism on theirs as well. Seems like times have not changed as much after all? In any case, really hope to get over my stomach flu in the next 2 days so I can actually enjoy my first real American Superbowl party. Come to think of if, I must have watched it once before when I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma but really can't remember much from that experience. I most definitely wasn't allowed to have been then - so it will be my first REAL Superbowl...
