One of the first things you notice is that there are many people selling all kinds of artifacts, some kitschier than others.
These are families and especially seeing the small kids on the street late at night and begging tourists to buy something really pains you. My friend said that when she first came here, she could not leave the hotel because she felt so bad for them. Apparently most of them send their kids to school though (or at least the boys I'm told). Still, it's difficult to understand how so many people here seem to have to resort to begging and sending their kids out to beg for them. Yesterday we were having pizza for dinner and the kids kept on coming by, so we decided to share the food with them but when we had given a little boy a slice, he came back after five minutes asking for salsa and hotsauce - so he clearly was not eating it himself. The next slice we told him that he had to eat it in front of us.
It's a very complex situation though and apparently it's hard for the Mexican government to do anything as many of the regulations don't apply to the native people or rather they have their own set of rules and ways of living... These toys were from a little boy who stopped by our breakfast table ...
