We have really been spoilt during our visit to California. San Francisco showed itself from its best side with lots of sun and nice temperatures and not too many tourists...
When we told my friend that we were taking the bus out to Sonoma valley, she was slightly alarmed. In a typical American fashion, she saw the bus as the last resort and volunteered to pick us up from the city. We didn't want her to drive that long and insisted that we would be ok taking the bus. I have to say the experience was similar to taking the bus in Daytona beach with my mum quite a few years ago. Most less urban areas in the US are just not great in terms of public transport. It's really only those people who can't afford to drive themselves. We actually witnessed one of the passengers (funnily enough the one sitting right behind me), getting pulled out of the bus by two policemen. We are not sure what exactly was going on but it didn't leave us with the most comfortable feeling. When my fried volunteered to drive us back into the city, it didn't take too much convincing...
Getting into Sonoma county we were stunned by the vastness and interesting landscape we encountered. It wasn't jut mountains that you saw after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge but there was also a lot of farmland, lakes and trees we saw.
The first night out friends took us to our first 'beer and food pairing'. I had no idea what to expect and was prepared for lots of bitter beer (not a big fan of beer unless it's octoberfest) and was hoping that there might be some wine too - but I was surprised by the elaborate nature of the event. It's quite an experience actually....
Let me start with the first beer to explain the concept...
