Some call it suicide, some are convinced ny is going to become the next Amsterdam (or are afraid that the city will have more bikes than inhabitants soon).
For better or worse, the city now has a bike sharing program. I thought it was a neat deal- you pay 90 dollars and can take a bike for 45 minutes on a flatrate basis so if you need it longer you can just get another one. I tried cycling to work yesterday and realized that I forgot how scary it is in ny- cab drivers certainly have no clue what a 'shared bike lane' means and I will most definitely have to get a helmet. Tried it getting home at night too but saw that it's even scarier at night where cabs seem to have no boundaries and seem to think they are ruling the world... Will need to find out more about where the eat bike lanes are. A shame but I reckon it'll take a while till NY becomes a real biking city and unfortunately there are bound to be some accidents before that...
