Wanted to share this article as I thought it's quite telling... Some of the Orthodox Jews from Brooklyn actually grow the wheat for their bread in Arizona in order to make sure it doesn't get wet. Apparently they need it to stay dry growing for seven weeks which is a little more difficult to do at the east coast. But even in Arizona they don't jt leave it up to the farmer to grow the wheat but they actually have some rabbis stay with the wheat for the entire time (camping by the field I guess) in order to safeguard their bread. The farmer was also interviewed and said it was amazing how much the rabbis would get involved and would want to clean his equipment etc. it seems like there is somewhat of a competition between different groups of the hasidic (orthodox) Jews about who has the most kosher bread... It's fascination to me how much this is engrained in NY life/culture. My flatmate told me that new york hospitals have their elevators running all night Friday to Saturday night because the Orthodox Jews would not be allowed to push a button on sabbath... I would compare this to being a vegetarian - I believe in not eating meat but at the same time I'm not going to freak out if a piece of meat has been swimming in my soup before. I do keep it with my dad who used to say, all religions are fine unless they are taken to an extreme...
