When my brother was visiting he kept on reminding me that I was very impatient. Whether while waiting for a subway train, the bus or just a coffee at Starbucks, I tend to get impatient when having to wait. At first I thought, well I have always been like that, no big deal, it's just the way I am. But when we started observing the patterns more closely, I realized that living in this city has certainly contributed as well.
We get used to grabbing coffee on the way to work, stopping very briefly to get a bagel, also to go and move at an astonishing pace through the city, as if we are constantly on the run. And in some ways people are. The interesting part is that there is a tendency to try to balance this immense speed at which we are moving by slowing things down, for instance during yoga class or with the new advent of slow food. Still, there is a constant hectic to be felt in NY - and why is this? Because people have to rush to work or home from work? Whether they run or not, they might still have to wait for their train though.
Being Busy For A Living
Part of it is that New Yorkers are notoriously busy and being busy is what they identify with. Being busy means you are needed in a highly anonomous world where you might otherwise not even get noticed. So instead of just chilling with one person, you'll have to meet at least three people in different locations all over the city and still make it to see a specific show/catch a movie and go for your work out - this ends up being stressful and exhausting. Instead of rushing, it might just be worth taking a little more time to enjoy the small things life offers us.
