Discovered a wonderful new form of yoga today at Sacred Sounds Yoga in the West Village. It is more about stretching than cardio but interestingly enough it is actually exhausting at times to just hang out...
During the class, called Unnata aerial yoga (unnata is sanskrit for elevated), you sometimes think you can't do things like standing up or tree pose in the hammock but it actually isn't half as difficult as it looks. The only challenging thing about it is that you need to make sure your hammock is not moving too much in order for you to still keep the balance. Hanging out upside down is actually fun after a while and when you come back down, you feel a little dizzy at first but actually it does help you in your alignment and the teacher told me after class that this type of yoga is especially useful in combination with other yoga classes such as regular flow or hatha classes.
Anyone who has ever done yoga before knows that the moment you finish your physical part, you usually feel some kind of satisfaction. But this one felt different - I almost felt like I was on a yoga high or something like that. You wrap yourself up in the middle of the hammock, looking like an egyptian mummy and actually feel elevated although you have not really done that much you feel like you had a good work out and a satisfying session.
After class she offered some breathing and meditation techniques as well - can definitely recommend this place and will most probably go back there!
Oh Anni, how cool! I remember talking to you about this one! I wish we had it here in Munich...
